NATIONAL YOUTH POLICY 2011-2015

The Kiribati National Youth Policy 2011–2015 was developed to empower young people to actively participate in the nation's development. While the Ministry of Women, Youth, Sports, and Social Affairs (MWYSSA) led its formulation, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MFED) played a crucial role in integrating youth-focused initiatives into national planning and budgeting processes.

Vision and Objectives:

The policy envisions a future where every Kiribati youth has equal rights, access, and opportunities to contribute fully to all aspects of spiritual, physical, social, cultural, and economic development. It focuses on four strategic areas:

  1. Education and Skills Building: Providing opportunities for vocational and life skills development to foster responsible and self-reliant citizens.
  2. Economic Participation and Employment: Enhancing employment prospects and supporting young entrepreneurs to achieve decent livelihoods.
  3. Health and Safety: Promoting healthy lifestyles and addressing issues such as substance abuse, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections.
  4. Social Cohesion and Civic Participation: Encouraging youth engagement in community and national development through inclusive and supportive environments.

MFED's Role:

MFED's involvement ensured that the policy's initiatives were financially sustainable and aligned with the broader Kiribati Development Plan 2012–2015. By coordinating development assistance and allocating resources effectively, MFED supported the implementation of programs aimed at youth empowerment, including education, employment, and health services.

Through this collaborative approach, the National Youth Policy 2011–2015 laid the foundation for a more inclusive and participatory development process, recognizing the vital role of youth in shaping Kiribati's future.
